What’s the Deal is a mixed-voice quartet formed in early 2023. Soon after, WTD registered with
the Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association (MBHA). Each individual singer is a member of the
Greater Pinellas chapter in the Sunshine (SUN) District of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS),
and in early 2024 WTD registered with BHS.
Helen D’Avanza, soprano-turned-tenor, has been a singer for over two decades
but has only been involved in barbershop since 2022. She has the most tattoos,
which help her sing better.
Dean Davis, lead, has sung over the years in many BHS SUN District quartets,
primarily as a tenor. He likes naps, candy, and singing tags - not necessarily in that order.
Betsy Walits, baritone, has been singing barbershop since she was 15 and was the bass of HI’s 2022
third place bronze medalists, Escapade (for which she “commuted” to NY from Florida). She has
sung lead or baritone in many other quartets, including lead in HI top ten quartet Sound Effects.
Joe Kane, bass, has sung in a number of BHS quartets on the east coast, and in several
SUN District finalists, primarily as a baritone. He also likes to sing tags.
WTD is the first MBHA quartet for all of us, and is Helen’s first barbershop quartet!
